How Codex 5-Hour and Weekly Limits Work
The 5-hour and weekly limits constrain the same Codex usage over two time windows—not two separate bundles. A task can reduce both gauges, and whichever one runs out first can become your limit. A normal 5-hour refresh does not refill the weekly gauge; your own Usage dashboard is the source of truth.
Usage limits and available options can change. Check your own Usage dashboard for the current allowance and reset times on your account.
The one-sentence answer
The 5-hour limit controls whether you can keep working now; the weekly limit controls how much remains across the longer period. One task can affect both, and either can stop included usage.
You run a Codex or ChatGPT Work task
Actual usage varies with the model, task size, context, reasoning, speed, and tools
The same usage is measured in two time windows
5-hour gauge
Tracks recent usage and refreshes sooner. Its refresh restores only the short gauge.
Weekly gauge
Tracks longer-running usage. A 5-hour refresh does not refill this gauge.
Which number should guide your next action?
Worked example: 5-hour 0%, weekly 84%
The short window is the current bottleneck. Even though 84% remains on the weekly gauge, that does not mean included Codex usage can continue immediately. Wait for the displayed 5-hour refresh, then check how much remains on the weekly gauge.
5-hour low, weekly high → check the short reset time
If refresh is close and the work can wait, starting a long task after refresh is usually more practical.
5-hour high, weekly low → protect the weekly allowance
Waiting for another short refresh will not solve a low weekly gauge. Save remaining room for necessary work with a clear outcome.
Both high → a better time for long work
This is a better time for multi-turn reasoning, tool calls, or longer execution, while still avoiding unfocused parallel work.
What does “Full reset (weekly + 5 hour)” mean?
Banked reset
OpenAI says using a full banked reset refreshes both the 5-hour and weekly windows and changes the weekly reset date.
Automatic / global reset
An automatic or global reset is applied directly to the eligible usage limits covered by its announcement. It is not saved for later use as a banked reset; the announcement defines its scope.
Normal 5-hour refresh
A normal short-window refresh restores the 5-hour gauge; it does not refill the weekly gauge. Recheck Usage afterward for your actual percentages and times.
How to get more value from your allowance
- 1. Read both percentages and both reset times. The short window guides the next few hours; the weekly window guides the coming days.
- 2. Define a verifiable outcome first. Split large work into audit, implementation, and verification, confirming direction between stages to reduce full-task rework.
- 3. Avoid several uncertain heavy tasks at once. Concurrent instances, long tasks, and more tools can increase usage; keep the highest-value path active first.
- 4. Build an account-specific baseline. Check both gauges before and after a representative task. Reporting may lag, but your own observed pattern is more useful than someone else’s screenshot.
“Maximizing” here means reducing low-value rework so limited usage produces verifiable outcomes—not bypassing limits.
Do Codex, ChatGPT Work, and regular ChatGPT share usage?
In applicable contexts, Codex and ChatGPT Work can share the same usage allowance. General ChatGPT messages, images, files, and voice limits are not the same as Codex or Work usage. Available allowance, refresh times, credits, and other options can vary by account and plan.

What to do when usage runs out
- Wait for the refresh time shown in your Usage dashboard.
- Check whether your account shows credits, a reset, or an upgrade option.
- Do not assume every account has these options, and do not treat contacting support as a guaranteed way to reset usage.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I see both a 5-hour and a weekly Codex limit?
They measure the same Codex usage over different periods. A task can affect both gauges, and you must have room in both to keep using included allowance.
How much weekly allowance does one 5-hour window use?
OpenAI does not publish a universal conversion. Usage varies with the task, model, context, reasoning, speed, tools, plan, and account, so use both gauges on your own Usage dashboard.
How many 5-hour windows fit in one week?
There is no officially guaranteed fixed count. Five hours is a metering window, not a coupon that can be multiplied into a weekly total.
What happens if my 5-hour limit runs out first?
You may need to wait for the short window to refresh even when the weekly window still shows remaining allowance. Check the refresh time shown in your Usage dashboard.
What happens if my weekly limit runs out first?
A short-window refresh does not refill the weekly gauge. You may need to wait for the weekly reset or use an option shown in your account.
Does ChatGPT Work share my Codex allowance?
It can in applicable contexts. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work as following the same usage structure as Codex; check your own Usage dashboard for your account.
Are regular ChatGPT messages counted against Codex usage?
General ChatGPT messages are not the same as Codex or Work usage. Product limits and options can vary, so rely on your account’s Usage dashboard.
Why is my reset time different from someone else’s?
Allowances and reset times can differ by account, plan, activity, and the options available to that account. Your own dashboard is the source of truth.
Can I buy more Codex usage?
Some accounts may show credits, a reset, or an upgrade option. Do not assume every account has the same option; check what your Usage dashboard currently shows.
