When Does Codex Reset?

“When does Codex reset?” can mean three different things: your 5-hour window, your weekly window, or a separately announced global reset. Your own Usage dashboard answers the first two; NextReset tracks public evidence for the third.

5-hour refresh

Restores the short window; use your own Usage time.

Weekly refresh

Restores the long window; a normal short refresh does not replace it.

Public global reset

Exists only when public evidence announces or confirms it; use NextReset.

Quick Answer: Which Reset Comes Next?

For your account, the next usable reset is usually the first relevant time shown in Settings → Usage: the 5-hour refresh if that gauge is exhausted, or the weekly refresh if the weekly gauge is exhausted. There is no public countdown shared by every user. A global or banked reset is a separate event and should not be assumed before it is announced or confirmed.

Personal 5-Hour and Weekly Usage Windows

The two gauges constrain the same included Codex allowance over different periods. If the 5-hour gauge reaches 0 while weekly capacity remains, the short window can block further included usage until its displayed refresh. If the weekly gauge reaches 0 first, a normal 5-hour refresh does not by itself refill the weekly allowance. Read both percentages and both times before starting a long task.

Global, Banked, and Personal Resets Are Different

A normal 5-hour or weekly refresh belongs to your account. A banked reset is a one-time option that may appear on eligible accounts; OpenAI says using a full banked reset refreshes both usage windows and changes the weekly reset date. A publicly announced reset is an event affecting a stated group. NextReset tracks that public event layer and cannot read your personal gauges.

Why Your Displayed Reset Time Can Change

The time shown in Usage is account-level information, not a universal timetable. It can change after an eligible full reset or as OpenAI changes the options available to an account. A screenshot from another user therefore cannot establish your next reset. Recheck Settings → Usage after any reset action and rely on the updated time shown there.

What NextReset Can—and Cannot—Forecast

NextReset’s advance forecast estimates the timing of a possible public global reset from recorded public updates and history. It does not predict the private 5-hour or weekly refresh on your account. Verified status is a separate evidence classification, and an announced or forecast reset is not treated as completed until qualifying confirmation appears.

How to Check Your Actual Account Limit

Open Settings → Usage in Codex, or use /status in an active Codex CLI session. Identify which allowance is exhausted, note its displayed reset time, and check whether your account offers credits or a reset. Options vary by plan and account, so the product display—not a web estimate—is the source of truth.

Check Today’s Global Codex Reset

Use NextReset’s homepage for the current verified public-signal result and today’s separate model forecast. Use reset history for the evidence timeline and original sources. This lets you distinguish “my personal window refreshed” from “a public global reset was confirmed.”
